Our journey began in Sinop, northern Mato Grosso, as we boarded a small aircraft bound for Cotriguaçu, flying deep into the heart of the Brazilian Amazon. For nearly 90 minutes, endless green forests stretched beneath us until we finally reached the remote region surrounding the mighty Juruena River. This would become our home for the next week — a true wilderness adventure focused on observing and photographing one of the most powerful birds of prey on Earth: the legendary Harpy Eagle.
The Amazon rainforest remains one of the last strongholds for Harpy Eagles, yet seeing them in the wild is becoming increasingly rare. Massive deforestation, illegal logging, and the rapid expansion of soybean plantations continue to fragment the forest and destroy the giant emergent trees these eagles need for nesting. Protecting large untouched habitats is essential for the survival of this iconic species. That is why places like Juruena National Park are so important. The park protects an immense area of rainforest filled with crystal-clear rivers, hidden waterfalls, extraordinary birdlife, monkeys, tapirs, jaguars, and countless other Amazonian species. The Juruena River itself is one of the great natural treasures of the region, carving its way through dense jungle landscapes that remain largely unexplored.
One of the highlights of this expedition was our stay at Fazenda São Nicolau, a remarkable conservation project dedicated to rainforest protection and sustainable development. The property is internationally recognized for its carbon project, helping preserve thousands of hectares of Amazon forest while supporting scientific research and ecotourism initiatives. Each sunset over the Juruena River brought unforgettable moments as the silhouette of the mighty Harpy Eagle appeared high above the canopy. Experiences like this remind us not only of the beauty of the Amazon, but also of the urgent need to protect these forests for future generations. 🌅🦅
