Today I’m sharing a truly special moment from the Brazilian wilderness — an encounter with the rare and elusive Morphnus guianensis, also known as the Crested Eagle (often called “false Uiraçu”). 🦅
This incredible sighting took place near the remote region of Sapezal, about 600 km from Cuiabá. This area is a fascinating transition zone where vast agricultural landscapes — especially soybean and corn production — meet fragments of pristine forest, rivers, and protected lands.
The region is also influenced by important river systems that shape the biodiversity of Mato Grosso, with several waterways feeding into larger basins. Not far from here, Indigenous reserves help preserve large continuous areas of native habitat, playing a crucial role in protecting species like the Crested Eagle.
Within roughly 120 km beyond Sapezal, the scenery transforms dramatically: crystal-clear rivers, hidden waterfalls, and untouched forest corridors create a paradise for wildlife. These pockets of preserved nature are essential refuges for rare and sensitive species.
And then came the highlight — discovering an active nest of the Crested Eagle.
Seeing this species is already a privilege… but observing its nesting site is something extraordinary. It represents not only a rare photographic opportunity, but also a powerful reminder of how important these remaining habitats are.
The Crested Eagle is known for its secretive behavior, preferring dense forest canopies and large territories. Its presence here confirms the ecological importance of this region — a delicate balance between human activity and wild nature.
